Jonathan Dockery is a native of Winston Salem, NC, but spent his childhood in Dublin, Ireland. His earliest memories are of drawing, painting, and making up stories with his mother Julie. Jonathan’s early exploration of art made art necessary as his mode of exploring and responding to the world.

After returning to the United States, he attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts for high school, and then the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He also went on to complete an English Literature degree from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, and a Masters of Divinity degree from Covenant Theological Seminary. 

Jonathan’s curiosity about what it means to be human drives his artmaking, as he seeks to capture the expressive moments that animate the drama of our lives. 

While painting and taking commissions, Jonathan also runs an artist academy in Winston Salem called the Downtown Art Academy. There he leads foundational classes exploring how to understand and capture form, portraiture, the figure, urban sketching, and plein air painting. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jonathan teaches his classes online via Zoom, but eagerly looks forward to bringing all his students back together in a physical space.
